The Partner - November 2008 Print E-mail
Being active is the theme around the office these days with many staff members participating in the Alice Springs Masters Games and the Horwath Swim Challenge now in full swing! Jacqui and Lisa competed in the netball, Lisa also finding time for the basketball, Tanya competed in the golf and hockey, Damian in the cycling while Sean and Andrew participated in the Super Rules game. After a hectic week everyone returned with a swag or medals and plenty of (mis) adventures to share.

Now it is on with the Horwath Swim Challenge which is now in its fourth week. The staff at Horwath are swimming to raise funds for our hospital volunteers - The Drovers. Read below to find out more about the Horwath Swim Challenge.

This month we said goodbye to our administration assistant Belinda Rosenthal. After two years, Belinda has moved on to a new customer service role. We will certainly miss Belinda's knowledge and efficiency ....not to mention her delicious sausage rolls. Our current receptionist Danielle Knight will move into the administration assistant role leaving a receptionists position to be filled.

Horwath Alice Springs Swim Challenge

ImageWith the warmer weather upon us, the team are back to the grind of swimming laps at the town pool which lead to the next great idea - let's raise some money for local charity.

Our hospital volunteers The Drovers, will be the recipients of funds raised when the team from Horwath Alice Springs take to the blocks during the next six weeks for the Horwath Swim Challenge.

Individuals and local businesses are being invited to sponsor the “Dream Team” with Horwath Alice Springs also sponsoring the team and donating to The Drovers by matching the donations received.

So many people in our community have been touched by the generosity and kindness of our hospital volunteers, The Drovers and so they will benefit from all the funds we can raise through the swim challenge.

To date 14 businesses and individuals have got behind the Dream Team, to sponsor the swim and therefore donate to The Drovers. Thanks to the businesses .....  Murray Pest Control, Alice Springs Watershed, Red Centre Office Technology, Get Physical, Asbuild and Dymocks for supporting the swim challenge.

As you can imagine The Drovers are appreciative of Horwath Alice Springs initiating this idea as funds raised will help them to attend to the daily needs of patients and to meet their vision to “provide care beyond treatment".

You may like to sponsor the Dream Team (Marc, Tanya, Damian, Sean and Tricia) for 10c per lap (up to $200) with all funds raised donated to The Drovers at the Alice Springs Hospital. Just for the record the current lap count is

Small Business Tips -
Improve Productivity by Controlling your Emails by Andrew May

Full article is available at:

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com.au/Article/Improve_Productivity_By_Controlling_Your_Emails

Remember the days when we actually posted a letter via ‘snail mail’? Those days are long gone and speed of communication is the new king. Sitting in the court of this new kingdom is email. It has revolutionised communication, making it simpler and faster for businesses to communicate.

Email facts

•    The average email user in business spends 2 hours plus a day dealing with email
•    Worldwide email traffic will triple over the next few years with 331 billion emails predicted to be sent and received per day by 2009 (Radicatti)
•    Average worker receives 48 to 75 emails per day, with many workers now receiving 200 to 300 (Christine Cavanagh, University of Western Ontario)
•    70%  of senior managers found dealing with daily torrents of email stressful (Australian Psychological Society study survey)
•    Costs $25, 000 annually on paying senior managers to read and write emails (research by Emphasis on UK’s Big Four financial firms)

New set of rules
So clearly we need to find ways of cutting down on email traffic and managing it more efficiently. Read the following 7 Deadly Sins of email to help you control the date deluge and avoid feeling ‘inboxicated’.

  • Sin 1: 24/7 email addiction – always connected and controlled by the medium.
Bing! … the noise alert ‘you have mail’ has to be the greatest killer of productivity and concentration. Get rid of the email alert and focus on one task at a time

  • Sin 2: email tennis – stuck in a serve volley game of constant returning emails
Ever had one of those asynchronous email conversations that goes on like a Lleyton Hewitt 5th set tie breaker?

  • Sin 3: email emu – sticking your head in the sand trying to avoid confrontation
Don’t use email as a medium to shy away from face to face confrontation.

  • Sin 4: writing a thesis – waffling on, and on and on and on and on in emails
    Get to the point.

  • Sin 5: BCC (But Covering Child) –CC’ing everyone to show how busy you’ve been
Needlessly long distribution lists are a major cause of email log jam.

  • Sin 6: quick draw McGraw - not thinking before you send

  • Sin 7: junk emails – spam, chain emails, and general junk
    That email you received from the Nigerian farmer about needing help to bring money out of the country probably doesn’t have much truth to it; and what about the endless parade of emails that ‘promise to bring you luck and abundance after you forward to 50 family members and friends’;

Final comment
There’s no doubt that email can be a scourge on productivity and an added source of stress. Used inappropriately, it can even cause embarrassment and elicit unintended responses. But follow a few simple rules and apply a bit of self-discipline, and email can live up to its promise of being a fast and efficient communications tool. That’s it for now – gotta go – more emails to send!!

What is a Management Consultantant?

Recently we welcomed Katherine Venice to the team at Horwath Alice Springs. Katherine is a Management Consultant and so it is timely to find out exactly what is a managment consultant?

The short answer is a business doctor, a business agony aunt, a mentor, and an objective sounding board rolled into one (or take your pick!).

As a business owner, you are focused on handling the day-to-day challenges and issues that your business and your competitive environment throws up at you.  You are the expert of your business.

However, as a management consultant, with extensive experience giving business advice to businesses ranging from retailers, to engineering companies, to arts organizations, to construction companies, to leisure & tourism companies, to healthcare companies, and many, many more, I can partner with you and bring a very different perspective to your table.

My extensive experience advising businesses covers a deep understanding of the various stages a business typically goes through, the different types of markets (from new growth markets to mature markets) that businesses operate in, and the competitive environment and underlying dynamics of your market space.

I can also look at your numbers, and quickly pick out vital clues about your business (a sort of reading your quantative tea-leaves, if you like!).

I won’t provide you with empty ‘fancy talk’ or business jargon that ultimately has no applicability to your business:  my job is only done when you walk away with concrete action points that you believe are meaningful, implementable and realistic.

I am really excited to meet with you and show you how I can bring value to your business’s future.

Horwath Alice Springs Financial Services - Risk Insurance - an overview

ImageWhen we think of wealth advice we often concentrate on investment strategies. While these are very important, it is equally important to put defensive strategies in place.

Consider the consequences of not being able to work for a year due to illness or injury or the death of the family's breadwinner. While nothing can compenstate for the emotional loss that such a castatrophe causes, it is possible to minimise the financial loss to your family or business with risk insurance cover. Consider Term Life Insurance, Permanent and Total Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance, Income Protection Insurance and Business expenses insurance.

Simon Strode is available to discuss options for insurance specific to your individual circumstances. Simon is a Financial Planner, and is available for appointments at Horwath Alice Springs. He will be here from 2-4 December. Many clients have already taken advantage of Simon's expertise.

If you have never met with a Financial Planner or it is some time since you last did, now is the time. To make a free, no obligation appointment call Danielle on 89510100 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Team Member in Focus - Katherine Venice

Proof of the link between maths and music, Katherine is a product of a specialist music school and spent her early years training as an opera singer and viola-player on the side.  She then made the ‘natural progression’ to become a Chartered Financial Analyst, earned an MBA in Spain, and then pursued an international investment management career in London and then the US, where she consulted at top level and advised numerous businesses across virtually every industry and sector.  Deciding that life is too short to live anywhere other than Alice Springs (the quality of life here is unrivalled), Katherine is now morphing into an Australian (an Aussie?), and is looking for an elocution teacher to get her to speak properly!

Katherine’s expertise/specialisation is giving business advice and management consulting.  To find out more about Katherine and the team at Horwath Alice Springs click here
